Taboos...things we can't talk about. We have learned that the various substitution techniques in replacement or alteration are relative to the time, geographical area and depend on the idiosyncrasies of the speaker groups they are applied by. We have seen the difference between permanent and temporary taboos and understand the nature of the taboos and we have seen it is possible to judge if a term is only valid for a certain society or if it can be compared and applied in other cultures as well. The explanation of slow and sudden changes shows how terms can be introduced and appear in a language and what can cause terms to appear. It became clear that changes of replacement terms regarding their context, the words used or their application show the development of the taboo they refer to in a society. We presented ways new terms develop, the idea of euphemistic replacements in order to further explain the evolution of replacement terms and how language varieties adapt new terms. It might be easier now to understand how the expansion of their applications, changes in their usage as well as the connection between new taboo subjects and new replacement terms develops.

Taboo terms, the words that are not to be mentioned. Still, this complex topic gives a deep insight into the development of language elements in general. People influence their language all the time, and the taboo words are only one example for the relationship between us and our language. If we understand why a taboo exists, we can understand the values and realities in our society - if we understand the situation of a taboo word, we might be able to tell what people think about that.
