Etymol. von griech. κατάβολος (Hafen) (s. TIB 361).

Identität mit Mutlubake hält TIB 361 für wahrscheinlich, ebenso BAtlas; ebenfalls wohl identisch mit der arab. Festung al-Mutaqqab und mit Monte Gabo/Giubu/Caybo in den italienischen Seekarten und Portulanen (s. TIB 361 mit Quellen).

Straßenstation im Golf von Issos auf einem eindrucksvollen, schon seit dem Neolithicum bewohnten Siedlungshügel, 1,5 km entfernt von den Amanikai Pylai an einer wohl bereits in prähistor. Zeit bedeutenden Verkehrsachse.
Keramikfunde von Muttalip Höyüğü belegen eine Besiedelung von der chalcolithischen bis in die hellenist. Zeit, scheint aber vor dem Ende des Hellenismus aufgegeben worden zu sein. In römischer Zeit jedoch wieder bedeutend (dazu Gates 1993, 392).
Gehörte zu den kilik. Städten, die Šapur I. 260 n. Chr. nach der Gefangennahme Valentinians eroberte (Res gestae Divi Saporis 24), von ihm erwähnt wahrscheinlich aufgrund der strategisch wichtigen Lage (s. TIB 361f).
Der eher kleine Ort muss in der Spätantike kurzfristig so an Bedeutung gewonnen haben, dass er Bischofssitz wurde; 431 n. Chr. nahm Bischof Valentinos von Mutlublake (sic!) am Konzil von Ephesos teil (ACO I 1,3 p. 25,19; s. TIB 361f).

Archäolog. Reste: röm.-byzantin. Bauruinen auf dem Hüyük und am Fuß des Hügels (s. TIB 362); Gräber und Straßenreste in der Nähe (s. Lehmann et al. 2005, 84f).

Alternativer Lokalisierungsvorschlag:
Küçük Burnaz (3 km sö. von Muttalip), laut Tobin 2004, die in den Küstendünen ausgedehnte Ruinen, Aquäduktreste und zwei Bäder gefunden hat, die Mitte 1. Jh. v. Chr.-7. Jh. n. Chr. datieren und auf eine Blütezeit in spätröm. Zeit hinweisen, eine Zeit vermehrter militär. Aktivitäten (s. Akpinar 2004, 36; Lehmann et al. 2005, 82f).

In the absence of a chicane, the river crossing #118 is perhaps intended to signify the start of a new stretch. Alternatively, the junction with a route from Mompsistea could fulfil this function.
