Der Ort ist literarisch frühestens bei Livius belegt, sein Eintrag auf der Karte damit spätestens frühkaiserzeitlich zu datieren.

Nerulos, Nerulo (It), Nerulum (Liv - fester Ort), Nerbulos (Ra), Herbulum (Gu); j. Rotonda. Im It 105 Verbindung mit Strecke 67. Semuncla 16; j. bei Francavilla, am Fluß Sinni; Grumento 27, Strecke 67. 28; bis Summurano 14 (oder 16 [It]); Muranum (I: X 118), auf einem Berge; j. Murano; von da bis Caprasis 21 (It).

RE: Neruli, als Station in Lucanien mehrfach genannt, so als Nerulo im Itin. Ant. 105. 110, als Nerulos auf der Tab. Peut., als Nerbulos beim Geogr. Rav. IV 34, als Herbulum bei Guido 43. Die Zeichnung auf der Tabula ist leider hier recht schlecht, denn die Via Popillia, an der auch N. liegt, ist nicht durchgeführt. Hier lief auch die von Mailand nach Messina durch die Abruzzen geleitete Hauptstraße in die Via Popillia. Diese Vereinigung erfolgte in der Nähe von Rotonda am oberen Lao. Mannert IX 2, 148 setzt den auch bei Liv. IX 20 als befestigt genannten Ort dem heutigen Castellucio gleich, Reichard dem heutigen Orinolo. [Hans Philipp].

Smith: NERULUM a town in the interior of Lucania, mentioned by Livy during the wars of the Romans in that country, when it was taken by assault by the consul Aemilius Barbula, B.C. 317 (Liv. 9.20). The only other notice of it is found in the Itineraries, from which we learn that it was situated on the high-road from Capua to Rhegium, at the point of junction with another line of road which led from Venusia by Potentia and Grumentum towards the frontiers of Bruttium (Itin. Ant. pp. 105, 110; Tab. Pent).

[PK: Verbindungsstrich nach Vico mendicoleo fehlt, Distanzfigur ist jedoch vorhanden. Die Strecke Nerulos - Vico mendicoleo - Cosilianum ist verwirrend dargestellt auf der Tabula. Cosilianum ist wohl falsch gesetzt auf der TP, siehe Barrington-Karte].

h) Hinweise zum Streckennetz und den Distanzangaben
Smith: The names and distances in this part of the Tabula are too corrupt and confused to be of any service: the Itinerary of Antoninus places it 14 miles (or according to another passage 16 miles) N. of Muranum, the site of which is clearly ascertained. If the former distance be adopted as correct, it must have been situated at, or in the neighbourhood of, La Rotonda, near the sources of the river Lao (Holsten. Not. ad Cluv. p. 293; Romanelli, vol. i. p. 389).
